ARTIST STATEMENT

Ten years ago I began to explore digital media. Around that time I also took my first trip to Italy. Something about the non-restored frescoes with their layers of crumbling plaster and flaking paint - their exquisite decompositions - moved me profoundly. It had to do the markings of Man combined with, and obliterated in places by, Nature’s effects over centuries of time. That alchemy, the wondrous mystery behind it, and the exploration of digital art software are what inspire my current artwork.

The computer monitor has become my canvas. In place of oil paint I now use software such as Photoshop with filters and fractal effects unique to the digital medium. To whatever degree I explore the media or utilize these tools, my approach is still that of a painter. In addition, the bulk of my work retains references to traditional print mediums and photography. In all instances surface, texture and color interaction are of paramount importance. Whether the subject is sunlight caressing the folds of a curtain, corroded metal or disintegrating plaster, whether it remains identifiable or is unrecognizable - beyond formal considerations such as color interaction and composition - what I strive to reveal is something of the subject's essential and exquisite nature, and my joy in creating artwork based on it.
